US Secret Service Warns of Crypto Scams Using Voice Cloning Technology
The US Secret Service has issued an alert regarding a surge in cryptocurrency scams employing voice cloning technology. Criminals are impersonating trusted individuals to manipulate victims into transferring funds, often before realizing the deception. Assistant Special Agent in Charge Joe Kefer of the Chicago Field Office highlighted the trend, noting a significant rise in such cases over the past five years.
Fraudsters are increasingly convincing targets to convert USD into cryptocurrency under false pretenses, such as impersonation or fraudulent investment schemes. A recent case involved criminals replicating the voice of a Nothing Bundt Cakes franchise owner to deceive employees. The Secret Service is investigating multiple incidents weekly, underscoring the growing sophistication of these scams.
